File Fomats
What are three advantages of a RAW file: higher in dynamic range, the complete (lossless) data from the camera’s sensor, and is typically a proprietary format
What is one disadvantage of a RAW file: not as sharp
What are three advantages of a JPEG file: usually not in need of correction, higher in contrast, sharper
What is one disadvantage of a JPEG file: lower in dynamic range
1. Under the first heading "Capturing the Images," how much of the data does a RAW file retain after it is captured by the camera? All of the data and information is retained
2. Under the second heading "Processing the Files," what are some of the things that a RAW file enables a photographer to edit after the image is taken? White balance, contrast, highlights, shadows, colors, and saturation.
3. Under the third heading "Practicalities," what are some of the factors that photographers must consider when deciding to shoot in RAW? RAW files are significantly larger than JPEG files, you can convert RAW to JPEG, and not every digital camera has an option to shoot in RAW.
4. Under the fourth heading "Which one is for you?" why would an aspiring professional photographer need to know how to work with RAW files? JPEG's have limited editing options and it is usually the first format and RAW files are more flexible.
1. Which file formats discussed have you used in the past? JPEG, GIF, RAW
2. What is the difference between a Raster and a Vector file? Raster: composed of pixels. Vector: made of hundreds of thousands of tiny lines and curves
The most common file formats we will use in class are .jpeg, .tiff, .psd, and either .dng (Canon) or .nef (Nikon)
1. Is this format lossy or lossless? .jpeg: lossy .tiff: lossless .psd: lossless .dng or .nef: lossy
2. What are common uses for each? By this I mean where would I publish each of them for the highest quality. jpeg: finished pic .tiff: stores raster images .psd: layered image file
3. Can you create this type of file in your camera? Not all. You can with .jpeg

This Week's Goals (1/3/18)
I am aiming to complete the File Formats assignment. I also would like to find the 3 paintings I want to recreate and to figure out the theme for my free shoot.
